About this book
How does a lonely young princess learn to survive a court full of spies, whispers and sudden favors?
In Memoirs of the Empress Catherine II., Catherine the Great tells the story of her early life, not her reign. Born Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, a minor German princess, she receives a summons to Russia. Empress Elizabeth needs a wife for her heir, Peter, and Catherine enters a world where marriage serves power.
Her marriage to Peter brings loneliness rather than love. Under Elizabeth’s watch, the pressure to produce an heir grows. Catherine reads, observes and waits, learning how to survive among competing ambitions. She speaks of loves, fears and mistakes, but also shapes her own image. Reading her means listening closely to both the woman and the future ruler.

A girl of fourteen enters a divided court
The book opens with an argument. Catherine says fortune is not blind, because it follows character and conduct, and she offers two examples, her husband Peter III and herself.
Peter lost his mother soon after birth and his father in 1739. He grew up among attendants who fought for influence over him. He loved drink early and hated his tutors.

What is Memoirs of the Empress Catherine II about?
It is Catherine's own account of her life from birth in 1729 to 1759, centered on her arrival in Russia, her marriage to Peter, her struggles with the Empress Elizabeth and the court, and her growth into a capable, politically aware woman.
Who is Peter III in the memoirs?
He is Catherine's husband, the nephew and heir of the Empress Elizabeth, raised in Holstein. She describes him as childish, fond of drilling toy soldiers and drink, and devoted to Prussia and Holstein, which makes him a poor fit for Russia.
Who was Count Bestoujeff and why does he matter?
Count Bestoujeff was the Russian chancellor and a powerful courtier who headed foreign affairs. Catherine's story follows his rivalry with the Schouvaloffs and his arrest in 1758, an event that tests her loyalty, courage and skill.
