About this book
A scarlet ribbon calls a weary schoolteacher up a hill, where Rosemary waits for something larger than her daily life.
In Myrtle Reed’s Master of the Vineyard, Rosemary finds breathing room among the birches above her valley. Below lie the river, the schoolhouse, and the Marsh family’s vineyards. She checks an unreliable watch inherited from her mother, then ties a bright ribbon to a branch. It is her signal to the man who meets her away from their daily cares.
He arrives tired of teaching and bitter about growing grapes. Rosemary knows the weight of unwanted work, too; her rough hands carry its marks. Together on the hill, they share their frustrations and their hunger for freedom. This gentle romance explores love and longing where familiar duties leave little room for the lives people wish to choose.

A scarlet ribbon opens a secret world
Rosemary Starr is twenty-five and has never left her little valley. She climbs the Hill of the Muses, where nine white birches become Muses in her imagination. When the school bell rings below, she ties a scarlet ribbon to the lowest branch. That ribbon tells the teacher, Alden Marsh, that she is waiting.
Alden arrives breathless and complaining. He is bored to the bone by teaching fifty restless children, and he hates the family vineyard even more. Rosemary listens, then suggests they lay out their moods like cards on a table. For three years he has lent her books, including a little red book of sonnets.
