About this book
What if leaving the underworld means turning against the ties that hold your life together?
In Leroy Scott’s Mary Regan, New York’s hard streets and quiet drawing rooms stand close together. Great wealth meets deep poverty, and honest people cross paths with crooks. At the center is Mary, a young woman bound to the underworld and pressed to choose between loyalty and conscience.
Scott makes this world a place of debts and ties as well as danger. Mary’s story turns on crime, loyalty and the pull of redemption: can a person leave the wrong side of the law behind? Secrets, suspense and sudden changes of fortune keep that question alive, while chapters close with questions that draw you onward.

The whole city sits down together
The novel opens on the night of a new show at the Grand Alcazar, a black and gold restaurant on Broadway. Clifford sits alone at a small table, and his eyes drift over the crowd. Without quite meaning to, he looks for Mary Regan, as he has looked for her during the six months of silence they agreed on. She said she would write when she was ready, so he waits.
He sees millionaires whose fortunes rest on schemes that clever lawyers kept just inside the law. Polished crooks dine with polished women. Clifford smiles grimly. There is no separate underworld and no separate upper world, because the two keep blending.
