About this book
What if the soul must answer hostile powers before it can find its way home?
The First Apocalypse of James is an anonymous early Christian revelation built around secret dialogues between Jesus and James the Just. Its two main scenes take place before Jesus’s suffering and after his resurrection. According to the text, Jesus comes from a Father beyond all names and prepares James to face suffering without surrendering to fear.
The teaching reaches beyond James’s coming death. In this Gnostic vision, the soul must pass hostile powers that question it on its journey toward the divine. Jesus gives James answers that work like passwords. Preserved in Coptic and found near Nag Hammadi, this text opens a window onto ancient Christian ideas outside the New Testament.

A brother's secret teaching from the Egyptian sands
The First Apocalypse of James is one of the fifty-two texts in the Nag Hammadi find of December 1945. A farmer named Muhammad Ali al-Samman struck a large sealed jar near a cliff in Upper Egypt. Inside were thirteen leather books written in Coptic. This work sits in the fifth, which scholars call Codex V.
The word apocalypse here means an unveiling. The text does not describe the end of the world as the biblical Book of Revelation does. It unveils the hidden structure of the cosmos and the path of the soul. The speaker is the Lord, who is Jesus, and the listener is James.

What is the First Apocalypse of James about?
It records two teaching scenes between Jesus and his brother James. The Lord speaks of an unnameable God, hostile rulers called archons, and the passwords James must give to the toll collectors after death, and it ends with James's speech and prayer.
Is the First Apocalypse of James the same as the Apocryphon of James?
No. Both come from Nag Hammadi, but they are separate works. The Apocryphon of James is a letter about a secret book, while the First Apocalypse is a dialogue about the soul's ascent and the death of James.
Who are the archons and the toll collectors in this text?
Archons are ruling powers that govern the lower heavens and oppose the soul. The toll collectors are three guards who question the soul after death. James is instructed to answer them with the words that the Lord has taught him.
