About this book

What does life near power look like when a sharp-eyed sister writes home without an audience in mind?

Emily Eden belongs to a political family at the heart of Whig society. Her brother George, Lord Auckland, becomes Governor-General of India, and she travels with him as hostess and companion. In letters to family and friends, she records the drawing rooms, journeys and social duties that fill her days close to power.

Miss Eden's Letters gathers correspondence never intended for print. Eden teases acquaintances, mocks pomp and notices the small events that official reports leave out. Her humour sits beside loyalty and worry, giving these private accounts their warmth. This is history through one woman's observations, not a formal history or a story driven by plot.

Who was Emily Eden?

She was an English writer and artist, the sister of Lord Auckland. She lived with him in London and Greenwich, accompanied him to India as Governor-General, and also wrote novels. She died in 1869.

They are real letters, written to family and friends between 1814 and the early 1860s. Short notes from the editor link the years. The humour reads like fiction, but the people, events, and places are true.
