About this book
Who is the man behind the monuments—a writer, a doctor, and a reformer whose memory a nation keeps?
In Lineage, Life and Labors of José Rizal, Philippine Patriot, Austin Craig follows Rizal from his family roots to his work for peaceful reform. The story begins with his ancestors, then moves to childhood in Calamba and the schools of Manila, where a hardworking student sharpens his gifts.
Madrid, Paris, and Germany widen the story as Rizal studies medicine, philosophy, and letters. His novels, essays, teaching, and reform work reveal the range of his efforts. Craig writes as an admirer, drawing on people who knew Rizal and his family, to show English readers the person behind the national hero.

In short
What does a government fear most in a quiet doctor who paints, carves and writes novels? This biography follows José Rizal from a village boy in Kalamba to the man Spain shot on the Luneta in Manila on December 30, 1896.

A hero must be understood through his ancestry
Craig opens by saying that a hero's lineage is more than a list of names.
He also claims that Philippine history had been written badly, as a record of governors with glory for Spain in every incident. Mistakes were glossed over, so they were repeated. Craig points to the walls and moat of Old Manila, built only after pirates burned the city and the English took it with ease.
