About this book
How does a people carry its homeland through stories, songs, love and grief?
In Armenian Legends and Poems, Zabelle C. Boyajian gathers old Armenian tales and verse into an invitation to know a culture. The legends draw on traditions preserved by medieval chroniclers. Haik and Ara the Beautiful stand among the figures through whom these stories explore beginnings, homeland and a people's sense of who they are.
The poems turn from the broad sweep of national legend to the feelings of a single heart. Love, grief, faith and homeland give these voices their subjects. Published in 1916, amid great Armenian suffering, the anthology serves as an act of memory: a way to introduce readers to stories and poetry that hold a culture close.

A compiler who wanted Armenia understood
Zabelle C. Boyajian was an Armenian writer and artist who worked in England in the early twentieth century. She gathered this book so that English readers could meet Armenian stories and songs in their own right, not only as news of a people in danger. She also made the illustrations that went with the book.
The book belongs to a wave of efforts in those years to show the world that Armenia had a long literature of its own. Armenians had a written language since the early fifth century, and a body of chronicle, song and folk memory far older than that. A volume like this one picks from that wealth and offers a doorway rather than a full survey.
