About this book
In a city of jewels, thieves, and powerful men, what is a good heart worth?
Charudatta once has wealth to spare. Now the generous Brahmin merchant lives in poverty, having given his fortune to others. Vasantasena, a rich and independent courtesan, loves him for his goodness. But Sansthanaka, the king’s vain and cruel brother-in-law, believes his rank gives him a right to her. In Ujjayini, love must contend with power.
The Little Clay Cart is a Sanskrit play in ten acts, traditionally credited to Sūdraka. Its love story unfolds alongside political intrigue as the cruel King Palaka loses his grip on the throne. Thieves, gamblers, servants, and judges crowd the action. A storm brings thunder, lightning, and heavy rain; comedy shares the stage with danger, jewels, and a trial.

A courtesan runs to a poor man's door
The play opens at the house of Chārudatta, a Brahman merchant who has given away his fortune to anyone in need. His friend Maitreya remembers the sweets they used to eat. Chārudatta grieves for a different reason. He misses not the gold, but the guests who no longer visit.
He still keeps his duties. He makes his offering to the household gods, and Maitreya says the gods have done nothing for them. Chārudatta answers that a householder keeps his duty whether he is rich or poor.
