About this book
What do you owe an empire when it can no longer keep your home safe?
In The Count of the Saxon Shore, Alfred John Church and Ruth Putnam take you to the last years of Roman Britain. Towns, roads and country houses still bear Rome's stamp. Yet the island's defenders are stretched thin, and raiders threaten the coast as the old order begins to fail.
The Count commands the forts along Britain's southern and eastern shores. Soldier and governor, he is responsible for ships, garrisons and the people behind the walls. Around that duty, the novel follows families facing hard choices: whether to hold to Roman authority, protect their homes or put one another first.

Soldiers kill one emperor and crown another
The story opens in the Camp of the Great Harbour, in the last years of Roman rule. Soldiers gather at the paymaster's office. They have just received their overdue wages, paid short in doubtful coins stamped with the face of Gratianus, their latest emperor.
Gratianus is rash but timid. When the troops shout for their pay, he freezes, then turns as if to run. A stone strikes his face, and the crowd kills him in the dark.

What is The Count of the Saxon Shore about?
It follows Count Ælius, a Roman officer who defends Britain's coast against Saxon pirates, as the legions leave and Rome's hold on the island ends. His foster daughter Carna and a Saxon captive named Cedric stand at the center of the story.
Who is the Count of the Saxon Shore in history?
It was a real late Roman military title for the officer in charge of defending the coasts of Britain and Gaul against Saxon raiders. The authors say it was created under Maximian and stayed in use until Rome left Britain.
Is The Count of the Saxon Shore a true story?
It is a novel. The authors explain that so little is known about the last years of Roman Britain that a writer has an almost free hand. Real figures such as Stilicho, Alaric, and Constantine appear alongside invented characters.
