About this book
In imperial Vienna, a quiet detective watches small facts gather weight—and suspicion slowly narrows.
In The Case of the Lamp That Went Out, Auguste Groner brings you into the world of Joseph Muller, known as Joe Muller. He is a police detective in Vienna, capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Modest and careful, he offers a different kind of company from the showy investigator: someone whose strength lies in observation and persistence.
Around Muller lies a busy city of courts, offices, cafes and crowded back streets. Its ranks and manners provide a setting for questions about guilt, appearances and hidden motives. The pleasure is in following small facts as they add up, letting suspicion narrow at a measured pace rather than looking for spectacle or a rush of violent action.

A body in the lane and a broken twig
The story opens in Hietzing, a calm and wealthy suburb of Vienna, shortly after six on a clear September morning. Anna, the milk girl, finds a young man in a ditch under a big elder tree. He has been dead for many hours, with a small bullet wound in his back.
The police arrive, and a quiet voice behind them adds a point about how a shot man may turn before he falls. The speaker is Joseph Muller, who has not slept for two days and is wide awake all the same. The pockets give the first puzzle. The watch and wallet are gone, yet a thin envelope with three hundred gulden lies in a hidden pocket. Muller says this can still be a robbery, because the hidden money was safer than a watch.

What is The Case of the Lamp That Went Out about?
It follows Joseph Muller, a modest Viennese police detective, as he investigates the shooting of a bookkeeper found in a quiet lane in Hietzing. Small clues, a broken twig, a mended purse and a lamp, lead him toward a surprising household.
Who is Joseph Muller?
Muller is a small, plain, gentle detective in the Imperial Austrian police. His rank is low, yet he solves cases that baffle the whole department. He rarely sleeps on a case, hates to cause pain, and works by noticing tiny details.
When was The Case of the Lamp That Went Out written, and is it a true story?
It is a work of fiction by Auguste Groner, an Austrian author who died in 1929. The Vienna setting is real, with places like Hietzing and the Riva dei Schiavoni in Venice, but the characters and the case are invented.
