About this book

What does freedom cost when every open road leads to shelter, temptation, or civil war?

Richard Lamb marries Paquita without her family's blessing, and her father's anger forces him to flee Buenos Aires. In W. H. Hudson's The Purple Land, the young Englishman wanders through Uruguay, then called the Banda Oriental, where love and curiosity draw him into a country torn by civil strife.

Across wide plains, low hills, and rivers, Lamb meets gauchos, landowners, soldiers, and women who shelter or tempt him. He tells his own story with frankness, humor, and a vanity he cannot always see. Close escapes share space with meals beside strangers' fires, while his journey asks what an orderly life leaves out.

What you’ll discover

  • Freedom under open skies Follow Lamb across grasslands where wide horizons offer a new sense of freedom.
  • Hospitality stronger than law Meet strangers who share meat, fire, and shelter in a country divided by conflict.
  • Love along the road Feel the pull between Paquita's memory and the women who charm and help Lamb.
  • War beyond the horizon Encounter soldiers and rebel leader Santa Coloma as rival factions struggle to rule.
  • A funny, fallible guide Enjoy a narrator whose openness and vanity make his account more than a travel tale.

Who will love it

You will enjoy this if you love travel tales, tall stories told around a fire, romantic tangles, wild landscapes, and a narrator who laughs at himself.

An angry curse on a hilltop starts everything

Richard Lamb has already done something rash. He has carried off Paquíta, a girl from Buenos Ayres, and sailed with her to Montevideo. They are almost out of money, and Richard finds no work in any shop. Business is frozen because a revolution has just ended, or another is about to begin.

What is The Purple Land about?

It follows Richard Lamb, a young Englishman who flees to Uruguay with his bride. Unable to find work, he rides through the countryside and meets gauchos, rebels, settlers and women who draw him into love, danger and revolution.

Why is it called The Purple Land?

Richard says the name suits a country stained with the blood of its people. Purple also suggests the colours of the sky at sunset. The first edition used the longer title The Purple Land That England Lost.

Is The Purple Land a true story?

No, it is a novel written in the first person, though it draws on Hudson's knowledge of the plains and their people. It was first published in 1885 and revised in 1904, and is set in the late 1860s or early 1870s.
