About this book
What happens when a sceptic asks Theosophy to explain itself?
In The Key to Theosophy, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky turns a misunderstood spiritual movement into a direct conversation. An Enquirer asks the questions of a doubtful outsider; a Theosophist answers. Their exchange begins with the meaning of Theosophy, then moves into its teachings about God, human nature, death and rebirth.
The questions keep coming, and the replies are often blunt. Blavatsky explains karma, defends the movement against charges of fraud and superstition, and connects its beliefs with daily duties. This is an account from a writer who shapes the movement, not a promise of scientific proof. You can follow her arguments without accepting her claims.

Theosophy means divine wisdom, not a new religion
The book opens with a blunt answer. Asked whether Theosophy is a religion, the Theosophist says no. It is divine knowledge, a science of wisdom.
The word comes from Greek and means the wisdom the gods possess. The author traces the name to the Alexandrian thinkers of the third century, who called themselves lovers of truth. Their teacher Ammonius Saccas tried to bring Jews, Christians and pagans to see one shared root beneath their quarrels.

What is The Key to Theosophy about?
It is a conversation between an Enquirer and a Theosophist. They discuss the meaning of Theosophy, the Society's aims, God and prayer, the sevenfold human being, life after death, karma, rebirth, duty and the movement's future.
What is the difference between Theosophy and the Theosophical Society?
Theosophy is the divine wisdom itself, called the eternal sun. The Society is the human body of members trying to live and spread it, so its failings should not be blamed on the teaching.
What do karma and reincarnation mean in this book?
Karma is the law that matches effects to causes and restores harmony in the moral world. Reincarnation is the return of the thinking Ego to new bodies, so each life carries the results of earlier acts.
