About this book
How do you love when everything you love is passing?
In Marcel Schwob’s The Book of Monelle, a young girl speaks in strange, tender sayings that stay with the man who loves her. Part fable, part prose poem, part sermon, this short work of French Symbolist prose follows no straight path. It asks how anyone can live fully when love and time refuse to stand still.
Monelle’s spoken teachings give way to separate tales of other girls, each with her own nature and desires. Her words call for life in the present and the destruction of fixed ideas. Across these encounters, love takes different forms, while absence gives the book its haunted mood. For the man who remembers Monelle, her sayings keep changing their meaning.

Pity comes once, then the night takes her
The book opens on a plain, where a girl named Monelle takes the narrator by the hand. She tells him he will find her, lose her and forget her, and then know her again. Her first lesson is about the little prostitutes.
Schwob gives a roll call of names. The eighteen-year-old Bonaparte takes a nameless girl from Nantes to his room on a November night. Her lover has left her, and her voice is gentle. In London, a girl named Anne gives Thomas De Quincey a glass of sweet wine when he falters in Oxford Street. Then she goes back into the dark, and he never finds her again.

What is The Book of Monelle about?
It follows a narrator and Monelle, a fleeting girl who teaches him to destroy old forms and to live in the moment. Between her words and her loss, eleven tales show girls longing, dreaming and playing with cruelty.
Who is Monelle?
Monelle is a figure who takes many forms. She is a girl on a plain who calls herself a little prostitute, a child of the play house, a seamstress and a sleeper. She says she is the one who is lost as soon as she is found.
What does the torch of fennel mean?
Monelle gives the narrator a hollow stalk of giant fennel with a flame inside. It stands for the task of burning everything, then breaking the torch, so that nothing is passed on and the fire returns to heaven.
