About this book

What if beauty feels most alive when you know it cannot last?

In Keats: Poems Published in 1820, John Keats brings love, magic and danger close enough to touch. Lamia, Isabella and The Eve of St. Agnes turn old stories into richly coloured narrative poems. Taste, sound and touch fill their worlds, while beauty and loss remain closely bound.

The collection moves from these three tales to odes, playful shorter poems and Hyperion: A Fragment, an unfinished epic about fallen gods. In Ode to Psyche, the poet offers a goddess a temple within his mind. Fancy and Bards of Passion and of Mirth bring quicker rhythms and praise the imagination.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

A last book written under a shadow

The 1820 volume gathers work Keats wrote mostly in 1819 and early 1820. It was a remarkable stretch. In those months he wrote the odes, the long tales and the second try at an epic, all while nursing his younger brother's memory, struggling with money and watching his own health fail. His publishers, Taylor and Hessey, brought the book out in 1820.
