About this book

What does a fashionable dress reveal about taste, money, and the wish to be noticed?

In Vanity Fair, Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd explores Parisian fashion as part of the pleasures and pressures of social life. Writing from the world of early twentieth-century fashion journalism, she considers clothes as more than useful things to wear. Dress becomes a meeting place for personal taste, public display, and social ambition.

Paris holds a commanding place in this world of women's dress, but following fashion is not the same as dressing well. Brainerd's subject reaches beyond the garment itself. The pleasure of appearance meets the need for approval, while the wish to belong sits beside the desire to stand apart. What, then, makes a person truly stylish?

What you’ll discover

  • Fashion beyond the garment See how clothes connect everyday choices with shopping, social life, and the wish to impress.
  • The question of taste Consider why wearing something fashionable does not settle the harder question of dressing well.

  • The pleasures of vanity Look at the enjoyment of appearance alongside the desire to be noticed and approved.
  • Belonging and standing apart Trace the tension between fitting into society and claiming a style of your own.

In short

Picture a woman in chiffon and sable, holding her blue hands out to a brazier at the Auteuil races while snow flurries drift past. She shivers, laughs, and is perfectly happy, because the spring outfit she planned has to be seen.

Chic is charm made on purpose

The book begins by linking clothes and femininity and placing their cults in Paris. Brainerd says chic has no exact match in English, and she uses it as the key to everything Parisian. It means coquetry, daring and charm, with a touch of absurdity added.

What is In Vanity Fair by Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd about?

It is a lively portrait of Parisian fashion and society in the early 1900s. It follows the Parisienne through her year, covering dressmakers, saleswomen, races, sports, restaurants, seaside resorts, hunting parties, Monte Carlo and the American women who buy her clothes.

What does the word chic mean in this book?

Brainerd treats chic as a quality that no other language names exactly. It means charm, daring, coquetry and a touch of absurdity, achieved on purpose and worn with ease, and she says it sets Parisian women apart.

Who are Fifi and the Duchess?

They are two types, not single people. Fifi stands for the demi-mondaine of the Paris stage and cafés, and the Duchess for the aristocratic lady. Brainerd shows them meeting almost as equals at the races, competing in beautiful dresses.
