About this book
When does a knight’s courage become a danger to the men who trust him?
Charlemagne longs to bring his army home after seven years of war in Spain. Only Saragossa still resists him. Its king, Marsile, offers peace, but the promise hides a trap. When Roland names his stepfather Ganelon as envoy, wounded pride turns toward revenge. The road home leads the Franks into a mountain pass in the Pyrenees.
Roland commands the rear guard, with his closest friend Oliver beside him. As enemy forces approach, Oliver sees the danger clearly, but Roland refuses to sound his horn. This French epic poem places loyalty beside pride and courage beside wisdom. Its ringing stanzas frame a hard question: what does honour demand when other men’s lives depend on your choice?

Marsile fakes surrender to end the war
Charles the King has spent seven full years in Spain, and every fortress has fallen to him except Saragossa, set high on its mountain. Its ruler, King Marsile, has no god to help him now.
Marsile sits on a blue marble throne in a cool orchard and asks his lords for advice. Only Blancandrin speaks. His plan is simple. Offer Charles lions, bears, camels, and mules loaded with gold. Promise that Marsile will follow the Emperor home to Aix, take baptism, and become his man.

What is The Song of Roland about?
It tells how Charlemagne's army, leaving Spain after seven years, is betrayed by the baron Ganelon. His nephew Roland and twenty thousand Franks are left to guard the rear, and they face a vast Saracen army in a mountain pass.
Who is Ganelon and why does he betray Roland?
Ganelon is Roland's stepfather and one of Charlemagne's barons. Roland names him as messenger to the dangerous court of Saragossa, and Ganelon, furious and humiliated, plots with the enemy to have Roland killed.
What is the olifant in The Song of Roland?
The olifant is Roland's great ivory war horn. Oliver urges him to sound it to call Charlemagne back, and the question of whether and when he does so is the dramatic centre of the poem.
