About this book

What separates a ruthless prince from a monster made by gossip?

In The Life of Cesare Borgia, Rafael Sabatini follows a pope’s son from church office into the struggle for power in Renaissance Italy. Cesare becomes a cardinal while still in his teens. His father, Pope Alexander the Sixth, places family ambition at the heart of papal politics.

France gives Cesare a title and an army; the cities of the Romagna become his targets. Sabatini draws on Italian chronicles, Roman diaries, and ambassadors’ dispatches to examine his career. Alongside the campaigns runs a second struggle: the effort to separate evidence from whispers, and the man from his fearsome reputation.

In short

What would you think of a man whom Machiavelli held up as a model prince, yet whom centuries of writers have drawn as a poisoner and a monster? Rafael Sabatini asks that question on nearly every page of The Life of Cesare Borgia.

Judge the Borgias by their own age

Sabatini opens with a warning. The Renaissance, he says, was an energetic, violent, lustful age, full of sharp contrasts. To judge its people by the standards of a calm modern century is like a stern elder scolding the reckless impulses of youth.

What is The Life of Cesare Borgia about?

It follows Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI, from his youth as a cardinal to his conquest of Romagna and his fall. It also traces the rise of the Borgia family and tests the rumors told about them.

Was Cesare Borgia the model for Machiavelli's The Prince?

Sabatini says so. Machiavelli met Cesare in 1502 and watched him at work, then praised his methods. The book cites his dispatches and treats Cesare as the model of the new prince.

Did the Borgias really poison people?

Sabatini argues the famous Borgia poison is a legend. He shows that the stories first appear in later or hostile writers, that the white powder could not act as described, and that deaths like Alexander's fit a fever then common in Rome.
