About this book
What happens when love asks for more than conscience can allow?
In Antonio Fogazzaro’s The Mystery of the Poet, love meets obstacles, and a poet’s deepest feelings remain difficult for others to read. This romantic novel turns toward the private life beneath the surface: longing, devotion, and the uneasy space between what a person feels and what duty demands.
Fogazzaro writes in a world where faith, feeling, and duty press against one another. The stakes are intimate: how can love find room when conscience sets limits? Rather than hurry toward answers, the novel offers a slow, thoughtful encounter with quiet feeling and moral questions that resist easy judgment.

A secret manuscript begins with a dream
The poet writes to a friend he trusts completely. He asks her to speak of his story only to God unless scandal forces her hand. The pages are meant to protect two reputations.
He tells her of a dream. In his youth he read a German legend of a well so deep that no one could reach its water, until a minstrel sat on the rim and played. The water rose as the music went on. That night the poet dreamed he was climbing out of an abyss, drawn upward by a gentle voice with a foreign accent. In January 1872 he dreamed it again, and he admits he is a mystic by nature.
