About this book

Beside the river Tagus, the countryside is gentle—but love gives its shepherds little peace.

Galatea, an admired shepherdess, stands at the heart of a world filled with longing. Around her, educated herdsmen sing, argue and suffer over love. Some love women who do not return their feelings; others pursue shepherdesses who do not want them. In this quiet landscape, desire is the question no one can leave alone.

In Galatea, Miguel de Cervantes mixes prose with verse, letting poetry carry the deepest feelings. Newcomers arrive beside the river with stories of love, loss and separation, widening the tale beyond its pastoral setting. This is his first published book: a formal, graceful romance where songs, friendship and debates invite you to linger rather than hurry.

Elicio loves Galatea and she answers with silence

The book opens on the banks of the Tagus, where the shepherd Elicio sings of his love for Galatea. She is a shepherdess so wise that ladies from royal courts envy her good sense. She never scorns Elicio fully and never favors him, so he lives between hope and pain.
