About this book
What does loyalty demand when serving your lord means putting duty before safety, comfort, and family?
In Tales of the Samurai, Asataro Miyamori brings you into the world of old Japan’s warrior class. These short adventure stories follow fighting men who serve lords and live by a strict code. Loyalty guides their conduct, but it also places hard demands on them when duty clashes with feeling.
Miyamori explores courage beyond the battlefield: a steady mind in danger, calm in the face of loss, and discipline in daily life. Honour shapes how these warriors judge themselves and one another. The stories turn those ideals into moral conflicts, where faithful service can matter more than personal comfort or even family ties.

A clog thrown in anger starts a vow
The first tale opens in a heavy snowfall. Daté Masamuné, the young lord of Osaki, walks out to a hill pavilion to enjoy the white world. Outside waits his sandal-bearer, Heishiro. He sees snow settling on his lord's wooden clogs, so he tucks them inside his robe, against his skin, to keep them warm and dry.
Masamuné slides his bare feet into the warm clogs and decides the servant has sat on them. In a fury he strikes Heishiro between the eyes with one clog, hurls the other at him, and strides off. Nobody helps the bleeding man lying in the snow.

What is Tales of the Samurai about?
It collects eight stories of feudal Japan, each built around loyalty, honor, courage, or revenge. The tales feature a sandal-bearer turned priest, a boy attendant, a maid avenging her betrothed, loyal retainers, and an honest servant.
Are the stories in Tales of the Samurai true?
The author says the tales are based largely on real events and adapted from stories told by Japanese kodan storytellers. Real figures such as Iyeyasu, Hideyoshi, and Nobunaga appear, though the scenes and speeches are dramatized for storytelling.
What does the word samurai mean in this book?
The book uses samurai for the knights of old Japan, warriors bound to a lord by loyalty. It also stretches the word to honest Kyūsuké, who was not a samurai but lived by the principles of one.
