About this book
An orphan boy has almost nothing—except an old woodsman whose loyalty gives him a place in the world.
In Irving Bacheller’s Eben Holden, William Brower tells of growing up under the care of Uncle Eb, a rough, kindly hired man. Together they reach a farming community in New York’s North Country, where a household takes William in. Among farms and woods, the boy begins to find a home.
As William grows, education and the hope of a career draw him beyond the farm. Hope Brower becomes a close friend and an important part of his youth. Set in the years around the Civil War, the story follows his widening world while keeping Uncle Eb’s steady love at its heart.

An old farmhand steals a boy away
The book opens with a flight. The boy's father, mother, and brother have drowned in a lake, and the farm is worth less than its mortgage. The county wants to send six-year-old Willie to the poorhouse, or hand him to a careless uncle. Eben Holden is a hired man with no home, so the authorities do not think him a fit guardian.
So Uncle Eb packs bread, butter, tea, and boiled eggs, ties them to a hunting basket, and sets the boy inside. He takes a cane in one hand and a rifle in the other. Fred, the old black shepherd, follows them out the gate.
