About this book

What if the truth you spend your life uncovering is the very thing your family wants destroyed?

In the southern town of Plassans, Pascal Rougon keeps his family's history in a cupboard full of folders. A country doctor devoted to research, he traces the traits that pass from parent to child. His niece Clotilde helps him work, while his proud mother, Félicité, wants the papers destroyed. For Pascal, they hold knowledge; for her, they threaten the family's good name.

Inside La Souleiade, science and faith pull at the same household. Pascal believes in progress and searches for a way to heal. Clotilde longs for mystery, religion and a place of her own. As their affection changes into forbidden love, Émile Zola brings his Rougon-Macquart saga to a close with a slow, intimate novel about inheritance, desire and the possibility of choosing something new.

“Zola was an artist, and one of the very greatest, but even before and beyond that he was intensely a moralist, as only the moralists of our true and noble time have been.”

A locked cabinet divides a loving household

The story begins in the workroom of La Souleiade, a small estate outside Plassans. Dr. Pascal, nearly sixty, searches his huge oak cabinet for a note. For more than thirty years he has thrown every page he writes into it. Only the top shelf is tidy, holding the blue envelopes, one for each person in his family.

What is Doctor Pascal about?

It follows a country doctor in Provence who studies heredity and keeps a cabinet of notes on his own family. His niece, his servant and his mother all try to change him, and a love grows among them.

Do I need to read the other Rougon-Macquart novels first?

No. The book summarizes the whole family through Pascal's family tree, naming each branch and its case. Readers who know the earlier novels will recognize the people, but a newcomer can follow it on its own.

What is the family tree in Doctor Pascal?

It is a large sheet on which Pascal records the Rougon-Macquart family. Each leaf names a person and notes the kind of heredity, from direct inheritance to variation and reversion. It organizes the book's ideas.
