About this book
In fashionable London, a good name can hide a rotten heart—and a careless rumour can ruin a life.
Lady Sneerwell turns gossip into a weapon, while Snake plants her stories in the newspapers. In Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s five-act comedy The School for Scandal, polished conversation carries ugly intentions. Around their drawing room, reputations become a game, and other people’s private lives supply the entertainment.
Joseph Surface enjoys society’s praise, while his generous brother Charles has a spendthrift’s name. Maria loves Charles, but faces pressure to favour Joseph. As their wealthy uncle Sir Oliver returns to judge his nephews, Lady Teazle embraces fashionable life, and her older husband Sir Peter struggles to see those around him clearly.

In short
What happens to a reputation when a dozen people each pass on a story with a little improvement? In The School for Scandal, a baronet's wife is whispered about, a young man is called ruined, and a duel that never happens is described by two gossipers with conflicting accounts.

Lady Sneerwell runs a workshop of rumor
The play opens in a dressing room, where Lady Sneerwell sits with her maid Lappet and a helper named Miss Verjuice, who sips chocolate. They are not chatting. They are checking on work. Paragraphs have been planted in the newspapers, copied out in a disguised hand so that no one can trace them. A story about a baronet's wife and a cook is already on its way.
Sheridan lets the audience watch how that story travels. Verjuice told it to her own maid, who passes it to her hairdresser. His brother courts a milliner's apprentice, whose employer has a cousin, whose sister serves Mrs. Clackit. By then the work is as good as done. Lady Sneerwell reads out Mrs. Clackit's record like a trade report, and her only complaint is that Mrs. Clackit paints too darkly. Lady Sneerwell prefers the delicate shade and the well-placed sneer.
