About this book

In a forest divided by war, whom can two sisters trust to lead them safely home?

In James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, Cora and Alice Munro travel toward their father’s British fort. It is the summer of 1757, and Britain and France fight for North America. Their escort, Duncan Heyward, knows little of the forest. Their guide, Magua, gives him growing reason for doubt.

On the trail, they meet Hawkeye, a white scout raised among the Delaware people, and his Mohican companions, Chingachgook and Uncas. Ambushes, escapes and pursuits test their courage and trust. Beneath the adventure, Cooper asks what loyalty means when friendship, family and rival powers make competing claims—and whose future those powers threaten.

What is The Last of the Mohicans about?

It follows two sisters, Cora and Alice Munro, as they travel through the wilderness in 1757 during the French and Indian War. With help from the scout Hawkeye and the Mohicans Chingachgook and Uncas, they try to escape the Huron warrior Magua.

Is The Last of the Mohicans a true story?

The central adventurers are invented, but historical commanders and a real setting frame their story. Cooper built the plot around the 1757 siege of Fort William Henry, the French general Montcalm and the attack on the retreating garrison. He published the novel in 1826.

Who is Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans?

Hawkeye is the nickname the Delawares give to Natty Bumppo, a white frontiersman raised among native people. He is a sharp tracker and a deadly shot with his rifle Killdeer, and he is loyal to his Mohican friends.
