About this book

What happens to a family when war crosses its landscape and a river follows its own course?

In The Innerste, Wilhelm Raabe brings the Seven Years' War close to ordinary households. French and allied armies march through the German lands around Hanover and Brunswick. Families live in the path of events they do not choose, while the river runs from the wooded Harz mountains toward the northern plain.

Fate and family stand at the heart of this quiet tale. Raabe sets the household beside the river and the war, asking how each shapes the others. His slow, reflective manner leaves room to consider private lives under the pressure of history, and the bonds that events from outside put to the test.

Three rivers and one miller's lost son

The story begins with a joke that turns serious. The narrator says three young ladies lived a hundred and twenty years ago and are still alive. They are the Leine, the Ihme and the Innerste. The Innerste starts as a bright mountain stream in the Harz. Then miners and smelters foul her with ore sand, and by the time she reaches the plain near Sarstedt she is wild and treacherous. Now and then she cries out.

What is The Innerste by Wilhelm Raabe about?

It tells of a young miller named Albrecht Bodenhagen who comes home from war in 1759, marries, and settles beside the Innerste river. Old family beliefs say the river cries out and demands a living victim, and a woman from the Harz is watching.

Who is Doris Radebrecker in The Innerste?

Doris is the red-haired daughter of the miller at the Busch Mill in the Harz. She is wild and quick, she carries a knife, and she holds a grudge against Albrecht that the story links to the river itself.

Is The Innerste a true story?

The narrator swears it is true, but it is a work of fiction by Wilhelm Raabe, set in the Seven Years' War. The rivers, towns and battles are real, and the legend of the screaming river is a folk tradition shaped into a story.
