About this book
What happens when Earth no longer belongs to the people who depend on it?
In The Death of the Earth, J.-H. Rosny aîné imagines a distant world where seas shrink and rivers vanish. The last humans gather around a few remaining oases. Among them is Targ, a thoughtful man who watches his people dwindle as the water that sustains them slowly fails.
But the drying planet is not empty of possibility. The ferromagnetals, strange beings tied to metal and magnetic force, begin to stir as familiar life declines. Targ tries to understand these newcomers. Can humans communicate with life so unlike themselves, and can they imagine a world in which they are no longer central?

“The water had come!”
In short
Picture the last human beings gathered at the edge of a desert, listening to birds that can feel an earthquake before any instrument does. Their springs are failing, their laws allow no change, and their sky will never again hold a cloud.

The last humans wait for the ground to move
The novel opens in an oasis called the High Springs, where a watchman named Targ stands at a great listening dish. A north wind has just died after fifteen days, the harvest is near, and Targ feels a rare joy at the green plants. Then three huge silver birds land beside him and speak in their picture-like language. They say the earth is moving.
Targ's sister Arva says something almost forbidden. Perhaps earthquakes could one day bring the waters back. Targ has dreamed the same dream in secret, because the Last Men would call it blasphemy.

What is The Death of the Earth about?
It is about the last humans, living in a few oases on a planet that has lost its water. A watchman named Targ finds hidden water, then must face the end of his people while new iron-based beings spread.
What are the ferromagnetals in The Death of the Earth?
They are living beings made only of iron, grouped in clusters and moving very slowly. They arose from metal used by humans, can drain a person's red blood cells nearby, and seem set to inherit the planet.
Who are the Last Men?
They are the final descendants of humankind, living in sealed oases with strict laws, birds as companions, and powerful machines. Their numbers are tightly limited, and they accept fate with a calm that Targ and Arva do not share.
