About this book
What happens when a town’s promise of prosperity depends on children working in its mills?
In John Trotwood Moore’s The Bishop of Cottontown, cotton mills rise beside Southern fields after the Civil War. Farm families move into company villages, hoping for steady bread and better homes. The mill owners see industry as the South’s way forward. But crowded housing, long hours, and child labor put that promise under strain.
At the center stands the Bishop, a churchman who lives among the mill families. His faith brings moral authority face to face with the power of money. Through owners, parents, and young workers, Moore explores what a changing South values—and who bears the cost. This is a direct, morally engaged story about work, poverty, and the meaning of progress.

A valley buried in unpicked cotton
The story opens in the Tennessee Valley in the autumn of 1874. Frost has turned the trees on Sand Mountain to crimson and gold. Cotton lies everywhere, in fields, ginhouses and bales beside the cabins. Yet there are too few hands to pick it, and the price is low.
The estate at the center is The Gaffs, five thousand acres handed down from the first Travis. Eight sugar mules walk circles beneath the ginhouse to turn the great wheel. The author lingers on the gin dust, hot, linty and smothering, which he says breeds consumption. A short hymn before the chapter calls the blossom a flower born in a sunbeam and dying in a loom. The plant speaks one word to the human hand, and the word is Pick.
