About this book
A lonely tower shelters a divided household, while faith shakes Scotland and a spirit haunts a nearby fountain.
In Walter Scott’s The Monastery, the Scottish Borders stand between the old Catholic order and the new Protestant faith. At Glendearg, widow Elspeth Glendinning tries to protect her household. When Dame Alice Avenel and her daughter Mary seek shelter there, the small stone tower becomes a refuge for a noble family that has lost its castle.
Elspeth’s sons, Halbert and Edward, both feel drawn to Mary Avenel, but want different lives. Halbert longs for adventure; Edward turns toward learning and the abbey. Around them move anxious monks, the vain English knight Sir Piercie Shafton, and the White Lady of Avenel, a spirit whose interest reaches into the lives of the tower’s young people.

Two widows and their children share a Border tower
The story opens in the lands of a rich Benedictine abbey in the village of Kennaquhair. Its tenants farm in common, live in small stone towers, and answer to the abbot rather than to a baron. One such tower stands in Glendearg, the Red Valley, five miles up a lonely glen.
There lives Elspeth Glendinning, a widow whose husband died at the battle of Pinkie. Her two boys are opposites. Halbert, the elder, is dark and fierce, and he flings the English red cross into the brook. Edward, the younger, is fair and gentle, and he fishes it out to kiss it.

What is The Monastery by Walter Scott about?
It follows two brothers raised on abbey lands in Scotland in the sixteenth century. One is drawn to the cloister and the other to the sword, while spirits, a preacher, and an English knight pull them into the Reformation's quarrels.
Who is the White Lady of Avenel?
She is a spirit tied to the Avenel family, based on old lore about elemental beings of air, earth, fire, and water. She sings in rhymes, helps and teases mortals, and answers Halbert when he calls her at a spring.
Is The Monastery a true story?
It is fiction, though set among real events and figures of the 1500s, such as the Earl of Murray. Kennaquhair stands in for Melrose, and Scott draws on real Border customs, charters, and ruins.
