About this book
In a quiet cathedral town, a respected choirmaster keeps a second life hidden in the smoke of an opium den.
Charles Dickens’s final, unfinished novel moves from a shabby London room to Cloisterham, a town of ivy, red brick and gravestones. John Jasper serves its cathedral and dotes on his nephew, Edwin Drood. Yet his secret visits to an opium den and his feelings for Edwin’s promised bride, Rosa Bud, darken that devotion.
Edwin and Rosa share an engagement arranged by their late fathers, not a love they freely choose. When Neville Landless and his watchful twin, Helena, arrive from Ceylon, tempers rise. Neville quarrels with Edwin, and the sleepy town becomes the setting for a murder puzzle Dickens leaves without a settled answer.

“When people say Dickens exaggerates, it seems to me they can have no eyes and no ears.”
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 9
A choirmaster wakes in an opium den
The novel opens with a man waking in a shabby room in London, his mind full of a cathedral tower and a strange procession. He is in an opium den, and the woman who keeps it is a worn, cackling figure often called the Princess Puffer. She watches him with a kind of professional interest. The man is John Jasper, and he has come up from Cloisterham to lose himself in the pipe.
Jasper is not what he seems in his home town. There he is the choirmaster of the cathedral, a respected musician with a dark, handsome face and a grave manner. He gives music lessons and leads the services. Nobody in Cloisterham suspects that he spends nights in a London den, and Dickens makes us wait to learn what drives him there.

What is The Mystery of Edwin Drood about?
It is about the cathedral town of Cloisterham, where choirmaster John Jasper, his nephew Edwin Drood, Edwin's fiancee Rosa Bud and two newcomers from Ceylon become tangled in jealousy, suspicion and a disappearance.
Why is The Mystery of Edwin Drood unfinished?
Charles Dickens died suddenly in June 1870 after writing six of the twelve planned monthly parts. He left no full plan for the ending, so the mystery has never been settled.
Who is Dick Datchery in Edwin Drood?
Datchery is a white-haired stranger who arrives in Cloisterham late in the book and begins to watch events. Dickens never says who he is, and readers have argued about it ever since.
