About this book

A city rises from the sea, then draws you into steep lanes, vast mosques and crowded bazaars.

In Constantinople, French poet and critic Théophile Gautier explores the Ottoman capital, now called Istanbul. His journey begins on the water, where the city first appears to him as a picture. Ashore, he walks through Galata and Pera, taking in rough paving, crowded boats and porters carrying astonishing loads. He comes not as a diplomat or scholar, but with a painter's eye.

Gautier moves from Hagia Sophia to the covered bazaar, where lanes and vaulted halls give each trade its place. He watches the sultan's procession to Friday prayer and rides on the Bosphorus. Along the way, dogs, coffee, costumes and crowds catch his sharp, often funny attention. His account offers a poet's impressions rather than a strict history.

Travel is a thirst that grows with drinking

Gautier opens with a confession. Whoever has traveled will travel again, he says, and each journey only sharpens the thirst for the next. He is hardly in Constantinople before he dreams of Cairo. Spain, Italy, Africa, England and Switzerland have not cured him. They have made him hungrier.

What is Constantinople by Théophile Gautier about?

It is Gautier's account of a voyage from Marseille through Malta, Greece and Smyrna to Constantinople, then of seventy-two days spent in the Ottoman capital, with cafés, bazaars, mosques, dervishes, palaces and the Bosphorus.

Is Constantinople a true story and when does it take place?

Yes, it is a nonfiction travel narrative based on the author's own trip. The events are set in 1852, when Gautier saw the sultan Abdul-Medjid, and the book records what he saw and heard.

What are the whirling dervishes in Gautier's book?

They are members of a Muslim religious order who turn in white skirts to flute and drum music as an act of devotion. Gautier watches them at their lodge in Pera and describes the dance with awe.
