About this book

What happens when the life you want pulls against the people who depend on you?

In The Brentons, her 1912 novel, Anna Chapin Ray turns toward a family and the choices that shape its household. This quiet American story explores what people owe one another in marriage, work and faith. Its central tension lies between private ambition and the duty that holds a family together.

The Brentons places ordinary people, rather than grand adventures, at the centre of its moral questions. Marriage is more than romance here; it is a daily partnership that tests character when life grows hard. At a gentle pace, Ray asks you to weigh the claims of personal hopes against responsibilities to other people.

What you’ll discover

  • Family at the centre Look closely at the bonds that make a household more than people living together.
  • Ambition meets obligation Consider the difficult space between pursuing what you want and honouring what you owe.
  • Marriage beyond romance Explore a daily partnership where hard choices reveal the character of those within it.
  • Questions of faith Spend time with questions of belief, duty and the responsibilities people carry toward one another.
  • Room to read slowly Settle into a gentle pace that gives ordinary lives and moral questions your full attention.

Who will love it

What is The Brentons about?

It follows Scott Brenton, who gives up a promising chemistry career to become a minister for his mother's sake. His marriage to Catie, his friendships with Reed Opdyke and the Keltridges, and his growing doubts shape the story.

Who is Catie in The Brentons?

Catie Harrison is Scott's childhood playmate and later wife. She changes her name to Catia and then Kathryn as she climbs socially, and she later turns to Christian Science, which increases the gap between her and Scott.

What does puffic' fibbous mean in the book?

It is a nurse's mangled version of a phrase comparing a baby to the god Apollo. The book repeats it for Reed Opdyke and later for Scott's son, giving a gentle, comic echo across the story.
