About this book
What happens when a poet turns his searching eye on poetry, friendship, and the workings of his own mind?
In Biographia Literaria, Samuel Taylor Coleridge blends memories of his life with literary criticism and philosophy. He moves from school days under James Bowyer to arguments about how the mind makes meaning. His aim is personal and demanding: to show how his opinions take shape, and why good criticism needs firm principles.
At the heart of the book is poetry itself. Coleridge explores imagination, fancy, and poetic faith, then brings his ideas to the work of his friend William Wordsworth. Their shared Lyrical Ballads becomes a starting point for questions about belief and poetic language. Friendship does not keep him from weighing a poet's faults alongside his gifts.

A strict teacher taught him that poetry has logic
Coleridge opens at Christ's Hospital, his London school. There the Reverend James Bowyer taught him to prefer plain, natural writing to showy ornament. The boys compared Greek and Latin poets and asked why each word stood where it did.
Bowyer held that even the wildest ode has a logic as strict as science and harder to see. He mocked stock images such as harps, lyres and Muses, asking whether the boy simply meant pen and ink. Coleridge still dreams of those severities, yet he calls them a debt he can never repay.

What is Biographia Literaria about?
It mixes memoir, criticism and philosophy. Coleridge tells how he formed his taste, answers hostile reviewers, explains fancy and imagination, and argues with Wordsworth about poetic language.
What is the difference between fancy and imagination in Coleridge?
Fancy arranges fixed images drawn from memory, shaped by choice. Imagination is a living power that dissolves and recreates, fusing images into a unity. It also works in ordinary perception.
What did Coleridge disagree with Wordsworth about?
Coleridge admired Wordsworth's poems but rejected the claim that poetry should use the real language of rustic people. He argued that meter and poetic art call for a language of their own.
