About this book

A headstrong young woman comes home from Philadelphia to a frontier where courage is no longer a choice.

In Zane Grey’s Betty Zane, the American Revolution reaches the settlements along the Ohio River. Betty returns to her family in Wheeling, eager for freedom and fun. Then Alfred Clarke arrives from Philadelphia and falls for her. Neither is ready for all that frontier life demands, and Alfred must prove himself in country he does not know.

Beyond the fort, Lewis Wetzel moves alone through dangerous woods. Betty’s brother Isaac loves Myeerah, a Wyandot chief’s daughter, while war divides their peoples. As British officers and their Indigenous allies plan attacks on the settlements, Fort Henry faces a growing threat. Romance, ambushes, and ordinary people’s courage come together in this frontier adventure.

Colonel Zane builds a town on a bluff

In June 1769, Ebenezer Zane stands alone on a rocky bluff above the Ohio River and sees a place to found a town. He marks a few trees with his tomahawk, then goes home to Virginia for his brothers and other families. They raise log cabins on the high ground, and when raids begin they build a stockade, named Fort Henry in 1776.

What is Betty Zane about?

It is a frontier romance set at Fort Henry, now Wheeling, during the Revolution. A spirited girl, Betty Zane, falls for a young soldier while her family, the settlers, and a feared hunter prepare for a great attack.

Is Betty Zane a true story?

It is based on real people and places. Elizabeth Zane, Colonel Ebenezer Zane, Isaac Zane, and Lewis Wetzel were real, and Fort Henry stood on the Ohio. Grey added romance and conversation to family stories and an old notebook.

Who is Lewis Wetzel in Betty Zane?

Wetzel is the famous lone hunter of the border. He tracks and fights hostile Indians, speaks little, and is feared by many tribes. He is also a loyal friend of the Zane family and especially fond of Betty.
