About this book

What can faith concede—and where does Martin Luther refuse to yield?

A church council is called, and Lutheran princes want to know where their theologians stand. At Elector John Frederick of Saxony's request, Martin Luther sets out his own testimony in The Smalcald Articles. His task is pointed: distinguish beliefs he considers beyond compromise from matters he is willing to discuss. His voice is blunt, personal, and firm.

The text moves through three parts: the highest matters of belief about God; the teaching Luther places at the heart of faith; and shorter articles open to discussion. Luther argues that Christ alone saves, then challenges practices he believes obscure that teaching, especially the mass. This is not a balanced survey, but a statement of his convictions and boundaries.

What you’ll discover

  • Beliefs that cannot bend See how Luther separates essential convictions from questions he considers open to discussion.
  • Christ at the center Explore why Luther places his teaching about Christ above every other doctrinal concern.
  • A sharp dispute Follow his challenge to the mass and practices he believes contradict the gospel.
  • Room for serious discussion Discover the shorter articles Luther offers for debate among sensible and learned people.
  • A personal testimony Encounter Luther's priorities in a voice that states rejection as plainly as affirmation.

In short

What would you put on paper if you knew you might have to defend your faith before an enemy court, and might die before the day came? Martin Luther faced that question in the winter of 1536 and 1537.

A council that never came

The book begins with a problem of timing. Pope Paul III moved the council away from Mantua, and nobody knew when or where it would meet. Luther says his side had to expect either an invitation or a condemnation without a hearing. So he was told to gather the articles of his teaching.

What are the Smalcald Articles about?

They are a short statement of Lutheran belief written by Martin Luther in preparation for a church council. They name the shared teaching on God, state the chief article of justification by faith, and list points on which Luther would not yield.

Why did Luther write the Smalcald Articles?

Pope Paul III had called a council, and Luther was asked to set down what his side could concede and where it would stand firm. He also wanted a witness that would last after his death.

What is the chief article in the Smalcald Articles?

It is the teaching that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised for our justification, so that faith alone, apart from works, makes a person right with God. Luther says all other points depend on it.
