About this book
What if the deepest drama lies in what ordinary people hope for, misunderstand, and leave unsaid?
In Love, and Other Stories, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov takes you into the small towns and country estates of late nineteenth-century Russia. Clerks, landowners, wives, students and officers hope, hesitate and misjudge one another. Love runs through their lives, but it seldom brings a simple triumph. What people want and what they understand do not always meet.
Chekhov watches these people with humour and pity, noticing the gap between how they see themselves and what their actions reveal. His stories explore unexpected love, everyday Russian life and the irony of human blindness. There are no grand battles here. The stakes lie in ordinary lives, and the endings leave room for your own questions.

Chekhov watches people like a doctor
Chekhov trained as a physician and practised medicine for much of his life. Many readers see that training in his fiction. He looks at his characters calmly, notes their habits and weaknesses, and does not rush to judge them.
This habit gives the stories a steady, honest tone. A character may be vain, lazy or cowardly, yet the author does not shout about it. He lets small details do the work, such as a gesture at a dinner table, a remark that comes out wrong, or a silence that lasts too long.

What is Love, and Other Stories about?
It is a collection of short stories by Chekhov about ordinary people in Russia in the late nineteenth century. Love, longing, habit, disappointment and small moments of human folly are the main concerns.
Is Love, and Other Stories hard to read?
No. The sentences are plain and the stories are short. Chekhov often leaves feelings unspoken and endings open.
Why is Chekhov important as a short story writer?
He showed that a story could focus on small moments and unresolved feelings instead of dramatic plots. Many later short story writers learned from his restraint, irony and open endings.
