About this book

What if the deepest drama lies in what ordinary people hope for, misunderstand, and leave unsaid?

In Love, and Other Stories, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov takes you into the small towns and country estates of late nineteenth-century Russia. Clerks, landowners, wives, students and officers hope, hesitate and misjudge one another. Love runs through their lives, but it seldom brings a simple triumph. What people want and what they understand do not always meet.

Chekhov watches these people with humour and pity, noticing the gap between how they see themselves and what their actions reveal. His stories explore unexpected love, everyday Russian life and the irony of human blindness. There are no grand battles here. The stakes lie in ordinary lives, and the endings leave room for your own questions.

What you’ll discover

  • Love without easy answers Explore longing that resists simple triumphs and feelings that do not arrive as expected.
  • People seen up close Meet ordinary people whose hopes and mistakes receive both a sharp eye and genuine pity.
  • Everyday Russian settings Step into country estates, small towns and city offices where quiet human dramas unfold.
  • Irony with a light touch Notice what characters miss about themselves, and find humour beside their uncertainty.
  • Questions that stay open Discover how a few pages can suggest a whole life without closing every question.
