About this book
What if the fear of hurting someone becomes the very thing that hurts them most?
Adolphe wants to be loved, but he also wants to be free. At the Count de P's house, the clever, lonely young man meets Ellénore, a proud Polish woman with two children. What begins as a game of seduction becomes a bond neither can easily escape.
In Benjamin Constant's short novel, Adolphe tells his own story of desire, pity, and guilt. As Ellénore's love deepens, his feelings begin to change. He cannot love her as she loves him, yet he cannot bear her unhappiness. Every unspoken truth makes their relationship harder to leave.

A guarded boy learns to hide his feelings
The story starts with Adolphe explaining where he comes from. At twenty-two he has just finished his studies at Göttingen. His father, a minister to an elector, plans a tour of Europe for him and then a place in his own department.
The key figure is the father. He is generous, but there is no trust between them. Adolphe recalls that in his first eighteen years he never talked with his father for a whole hour. Only later does he see that his father was shy, and that the old man often left the room with tears in his eyes, complaining that his son did not love him.

What is Adolphe by Benjamin Constant about?
It follows a young man who sets out to win an older woman, Ellénore, out of vanity. Once she loves him and sacrifices her position for him, he cannot return that love, and the pair grow more unhappy together.
Is Adolphe a true story?
Constant says he meant to portray no real person, and he objected to readers hunting for hidden portraits. The book is a work of imagination, framed as a notebook found by a traveler, and it was written in the early nineteenth century.
Who is Ellénore in Adolphe?
Ellénore is a proud Polish woman, ten years older than Adolphe, who lives with the Count of P and has two children by him. She leaves everything behind to follow Adolphe and wants only his love in return.
