About this book
What happens when your oldest friend's happiness feels like a wound?
Abel Sánchez and Joaquín Monegro grow up together, but friendship never makes them equals. Abel becomes an admired painter, charming and at ease. Joaquín becomes a hard-working doctor who feels cheated by life. When Helena, the woman Joaquín hopes to win, chooses Abel, their rivalry takes a deeper hold.
In Abel Sánchez, Miguel de Unamuno retells the biblical story of Cain and Abel in a Spanish setting. Much of the novel unfolds through Joaquín's written confession to his daughter, Joaquina. His excuses bring you close to a hatred that work, marriage and family cannot quiet, while his wife, Antonia, tries to draw him away from it.

Two friends who learned themselves from each other
The novel opens with a bond so old that neither man can date it. Abel Sánchez and Joaquín Monegro were brought together by their nurses before they could speak. Each learned to know himself by knowing the other.
The two are built differently. Joaquín is strong-willed and serious, and he seems to lead. Abel gives way to everything with the words whatever you like, and in this way he always gets what he wants. When friends plan an outing to the Pine Grove, Joaquín tries to force a quarrel out of Abel's easy agreement. He wants one honest no. Abel will not give it, and the group goes with Abel and leaves Joaquín standing alone.

What is Abel Sánchez about?
It follows the lifelong friendship of a painter, Abel Sánchez, and a doctor, Joaquín Monegro. Joaquín's envy of Abel's easy success and of the woman Abel marries slowly poisons his life, his marriage and his family.
What is the Cain and Abel link in Abel Sánchez?
Unamuno bases the story on the Bible tale of the first two brothers. Abel paints the scene, Joaquín reads Byron's poem Cain, and the novel keeps asking why one brother is favoured and the other is not.
Who is Helena and why does she matter?
Helena is Joaquín's cousin, whom he courts and later introduces to Abel. She becomes Abel's model and wife. Her choice starts the hatred and she keeps inflaming it through her pride and her scorn.
