About this book

What if your family name promises greatness, but every quarrel leaves you wishing you could hide?

Gonçalo Mendes Ramires lives in an old manor beside a medieval tower in northern Portugal. The last heir of an ancient noble house, he wants to deserve his name and gain a place in politics. Yet this charming, timid man finds everyday courage harder than ancestral pride.

When his friend José Lúcio Castanheiro asks for a story, Gonçalo turns to his warrior ancestor, Tructesindo Ramires. His grand historical tale runs beside a present full of embarrassment, favours and awkward bargains. In The Illustrious House of Ramires, Eça de Queirós asks what happens when a man—and a country—looks to the past for greatness.
