In Chapter 3, Christie enters the theater through Lucy’s help, rises from spectacle performer to salaried actress, and grows increasingly absorbed in applause while their friendship breaks under jealousy. During her benefit performance, compassion replaces resentment, and she saves Lucy from falling machinery but suffers an injury that leaves her unconscious.
What happens
- After other work proves unavailable, Christie accepts Lucy’s offer to perform as an Amazon queen and succeeds despite her fears.
- Her singing, character performances, and Kent’s support bring promotion and a regular salary of thirty dollars a week.
