In Chapter 10, Christie Devon enters Mrs. Sterling’s household as a helper and finds steady kindness in domestic tasks, flower arranging, and shared evening quiet. David’s cheerful manner overturns her imagined picture of a wounded recluse, while their work together and his sympathy help her begin to feel safe among friends.
What happens

- While dusting David’s attic, Christie sees books and personal keepsakes and imagines him as a sorrowful recluse.
- David proves cheerful and practical, surprising Christie before inviting her to help arrange flowers in the conservatory.
- They prepare party bouquets and flowers for a dead baby, and their shared care makes them friends.
- While gathering eggs, David explains Kitty’s stay and departure, then assures Christie that the household offers friendship and a home.
- An evening of darning, reading, and quiet kindness leaves Christie feeling sheltered, despite memories of broken attachments.
