Chapter 26 of 42 · 24 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 26, Lucy buries Dr. John Bretton’s letters after renewed interference with her drawer, encounters the silent nun, and refuses paid dependence as Paulina’s companion. German lessons strengthen her friendship with Paulina, whose distress over Ginevra’s claims about Graham prompts a plan to test those claims at dinner.

What happens

  1. Madame Beck approves Lucy’s outings, but interference with her letters makes Lucy fear that M. Paul Emanuel also reads them.
  2. Lucy seals the letters in a bottle and hides them inside the old pear tree as a burial of grief.
  3. A veiled woman appears in the garden, retreats when Lucy approaches, and disappears behind shrubs.
  4. Lucy refuses Mr. Home’s offer of paid companionship but agrees to share German lessons with Paulina.
  5. M. Emanuel condemns Lucy’s outings, while Paulina grows more responsive to Graham despite doubts about his character.
  6. Paulina reveals Ginevra’s boasts about Graham, and Lucy proposes testing them by inviting Ginevra to dinner.
