Villette, Chapter 14 summary

Chapter 14 of 42 · 45 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 14, preparations for Madame Beck’s celebration draw the narrator from chosen solitude into an emergency role in the school comedy when a pupil becomes unavailable. M. Paul Emanuel coaches her, confines her to learn the part, and brings her backstage, where she resists wearing a complete male costume.

What happens

  1. After Georgette leaves, the narrator rejects the teachers’ companionship and describes Madame Beck’s practical reliance on Zélie St. Pierre.
  2. The school prepares Madame’s celebration, and M. Paul Emanuel replaces an unsuccessful tragedy with a comedy.
  3. On the celebration day, the narrator dresses quietly and retreats to read until M. Paul demands her help.
  4. She agrees to replace Louise Vanderkelkov as a foolish male suitor, and M. Paul locks her in the attic to study.
  5. After hearing her rehearse, M. Paul brings her downstairs for food and escorts her to the performers’ room.
  6. The narrator refuses a complete male costume and asks to arrange her own clothing without interference.
