The Time Machine, Chapter 6 summary

Chapter 6 of 17 · 9 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 6, the narrator explores the future landscape and interprets its fragile inhabitants, communal buildings, and abundant ruins as signs of humanity declining through perfect security. He argues that freedom from danger removes the need for strength and intelligence, but explicitly marks his explanation as mistaken.

What happens

  1. The narrator finds his friendly hosts easily distracted and leaves their hall to explore the surrounding landscape.
  2. He notices ruined structures and no small houses, then guesses that communal living replaces individual households.
  3. Similar clothing and bodies lead him to speculate that safety removes differences between the sexes and the need for families.
  4. From a hilltop seat, he surveys palaces, greenery, and the Thames without visible farming or property boundaries.
  5. He reasons that humanity conquers disease, labor, and danger, then loses the strength and intelligence that hardship demands.
  6. He connects the ruins with possible population decline, but calls his apparently convincing theory wrong.

What to notice

The closing admission prevents his account of human decline from becoming an established explanation. His confidence exceeds what his observations prove.

Quick check

What does the narrator infer from the absence of small houses?
