Who Edward Prendick is

Edward Prendick is an educated Englishman with some scientific training, rescued from a lifeboat after his ship sinks. His rescue brings him into contact with Montgomery, a young doctor who feeds him and nurses him back to strength. When the ship's captain forces him ashore, Prendick becomes an unwilling guest on Moreau's island.

What Edward Prendick wants

Prendick wants above all to stay alive and find a way home. The cries from Moreau's locked room make him fear that the doctor experiments on human beings. His search for safety takes him into the forest, where he encounters the Beast People.

How Edward Prendick changes

Prendick discovers that the islanders are animals shaped into human form, rather than people injured by experiments. Moreau's explanation horrifies him, but his dependence on the island's two doctors limits his ability to challenge their work. As he spends more time on the island, he increasingly watches people for signs of the animal.
