In Chapter 3, Quasimodo disappears, and rumors about his supposed pact with Claude Frollo lead to the archdeacon’s exclusion from sacred burial ground. The narrator then reports Louis XI’s death, Pierre Gringoire’s theatrical success, and Phœbus de Châteaupers’s marriage, treating the last event as a tragic fate.

What happens

  1. The bishop’s officers arrive to collect the archdeacon’s corpse toward evening, but Quasimodo has disappeared.
  2. People explain the death through a supposed pact between devil and sorcerer, and the archdeacon receives no burial in sacred ground.
  3. Louis XI dies the following year, in August 1483.
  4. Pierre Gringoire saves the goat and succeeds in tragedy, with a record documenting payment for a theatrical production.
  5. The narrator announces Phœbus de Châteaupers’s marriage as another tragic end.
