In Searcy Foote, Searcy describes how financial frustration and his desire to marry Delia Prickett lead him to kill Aunt Persis with chloroform. The coroner attributes her death to heart failure, and Searcy gains her money, marries Delia, and taunts Spoon River about the deception.
What happens
- Aunt Persis refuses to help Searcy attend college, so he earns money through gardening and lawn work and buys John Alden’s books.
- Searcy wants to marry Delia Prickett but considers his earnings insufficient, while his wealthy aunt remains preoccupied with investments.
- While sawing wood for Persis and reading Proudhon between tasks, he enters her house and finds her asleep beside chloroform.
- He applies chloroform to a handkerchief and holds it against her nose until she dies.
- The coroner declares heart failure; Searcy marries Delia, receives the money, and challenges Spoon River with a mocking question.
