Silas Marner, Chapter 6 summary

Chapter 6 of 22 · Part 1 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 6, the Rainbow’s customers move from arguments about a cow and choir singing to Mr. Macey’s accounts of the Lammeters and the Warrens. Their familiar conversation exposes local rivalries and shared memories, then becomes a dispute between Mr. Dowlas’s disbelief in ghosts and his companions’ defenses of supernatural stories.

What happens

  1. As Silas approaches the Rainbow, the narrator describes how its customers begin their conversation with an argument about a cow.
  2. Ben Winthrop and Mr. Macey mock Mr. Tookey’s singing, while the landlord tries to calm the dispute.
  3. Mr. Macey recalls the Lammeters’ arrival and a wedding whose reversed vows make him question what establishes a marriage.
  4. He explains how Mr. Cliff’s property passes to a charity after the deaths of Cliff and his son.
  5. Stories of haunting at the unused stables prompt Mr. Dowlas to propose a wager against seeing ghosts.
  6. The landlord suggests that some people cannot perceive ghosts, while Mr. Macey rejects Dowlas’s demands for public proof.

What to notice

The landlord makes disbelief compatible with the existence of ghosts. His argument protects both sides rather than resolving their disagreement.

Quick check

What does Mr. Drumlow say makes the Lammeters’ marriage valid?
