Oswald Langdon in short

Oswald Langdon is the story of a proud young man whose life is broken by a crime he did not commit and slowly rebuilt through exile. A storm brings him to Northfield, where he loves Esther Randolph and is refused. A night on the Thames sends him running, and the pursuit follows him and his enemies across India and back to London.

What Oswald Langdon is about

A frightened newsboy hurries past a man on a New York street, crying out about a young girl found drowned in a river. The man flinches. He is Oswald Langdon, and he has good reason to be afraid.

Oswald Langdon is a Victorian novel by Levi Jackson Hamilton. It follows a gifted young Englishman from a country estate called Northfield to London, then on to Calcutta, the Himalayas and New York. Along the way come a refused proposal, forged deeds, a night attack beside the Thames, and two villains who change faces as easily as coats. You get the whole shape of the story.

Who it’s for. Readers who love Victorian sensation fiction will enjoy disguises, shadowing, forged deeds, a haunted villain, and romance tested by duty. It also suits those drawn to plots that span continents.

A storm throws Oswald into Northfield

The book opens with a brief scene on a New York street, then turns back to a young graduate riding on a sultry day. Lightning splits a tree, his horse falls dead, and a passing driver takes him in a wagon to a large house called Northfield.

His host is Donald Randolph, a barrister of about fifty, called Sir Donald. He asks few questions yet learns nearly everything. Oswald is a rector's son who hopes to be a barrister, though he once dreamed of being a great general.

They talk about war. Oswald believes huge armies and long-range guns will keep nations at peace. Sir Donald answers gently that wealth can make a people soft and eager to buy peace at any price. That night Oswald dreams of a drowned girl and a hateful face that hunts him across the earth.

A single flash of lightning opens a door that Oswald can never close.
