In Chapter 9, Catherine joins John Thorpe for a drive instead of seeking Miss Tilney, and his boasting leaves her bored and confused. When Mrs. Allen reports meeting both Tilneys during her absence, Catherine regrets her choice and reaches a firmer judgment that Thorpe is disagreeable.

What happens

  1. Refreshed after sleep, Catherine plans to seek Miss Tilney at the Pump Room, but John Thorpe arrives to claim a promised drive.
  2. With Mrs. Allen’s permission, Catherine accompanies Thorpe while Isabella rides with James.
  3. Thorpe questions Catherine about Mr. Allen’s wealth, defends heavy drinking, and repeatedly praises his own driving and carriage.
  4. His contradictory claims about James’s carriage confuse Catherine, and his constant boasting makes her doubt his charm.
  5. After their return, Isabella praises the outing, while Catherine avoids agreeing with her.
  6. Mrs. Allen describes meeting the Tilneys with Mrs. Hughes, leaving Catherine disappointed about the meeting she misses.
